Got a Taco Bell run planned this week? You might want to think twice about what lands on your tray. There’s a nasty stomach bug moving through the country right now, and health investigators traced a big chunk of it straight to the shredded iceberg lettuce piled on top of your taco.
The parasite is called Cyclospora, and 2026 has been rough. Since May 1, close to 7,000 cases have been confirmed or flagged for review across 34 states. The CDC has confirmed 1,645 of them and is still sorting through more than 5,100 others. There have been 141 hospitalizations, and no deaths. For comparison, the entire year of 2025 saw about 2,700 cases. So yeah, this one is different.
Why Your Taco Bell Order Suddenly Matters
On July 17, 2026, Taylor Farms de Mexico pulled back all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico. The FDA and CDC had already connected the dots to Taco Bell locations in five states: Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. Michigan got hit hardest, with thousands of cases piling up through the summer.
Here’s the part that should make you pause. Michigan health officials interviewed 190 people who got sick after eating at Taco Bell. A full 90% of them reported eating iceberg lettuce. When you line up those numbers, the lettuce stops looking like a coincidence. More than 1,644 sick people reported eating at Taco Bell, with illnesses starting between May 13 and July 13.
Symptoms usually show up about a week after you eat contaminated food, though it can range from two days to two weeks. Think watery diarrhea that fades and then comes roaring back, plus loss of appetite, cramping, bloating, and being wiped out for days. It can drag on for weeks. Now let’s rank the menu items by how much of that recalled lettuce you’re actually getting, starting with the one to skip completely.
Fiesta Taco Salad (The One To Skip)
If there’s a worst pick on the board, this is it. The Fiesta Taco Salad is basically a shell filled with a mountain of shredded iceberg lettuce, then topped with beef, beans, cheese, and pico. Lettuce is not a garnish here. It’s the main event, running you around $7.
The whole issue with this outbreak is the sheer volume of raw, shredded, pre-bagged greens. Experts have been clear that pre-cut and packaged lettuce gets handled a lot before it reaches your tray, and that handling is where the trouble hides. A salad that’s mostly lettuce is the last thing you want to order right now.
Nachos BellGrande
People forget how much lettuce ends up on a Nachos BellGrande. It’s not just chips, beef, beans, and cheese. There’s a generous scatter of shredded iceberg and diced tomato right on top, and at around $6, it’s one of the more loaded items on the menu.
The tricky thing about Cyclospora is that you can’t rinse your way out of it. The oocysts lodge into tiny crevices on the surface of produce and cling tight. That’s true whether you’re at home or in a fast-food kitchen. A quick spray of water at a restaurant prep station isn’t going to fix it, so the lettuce piled on your nachos is a gamble.
Crunchwrap Supreme
The Crunchwrap Supreme is one of Taco Bell’s most ordered items, and yes, it packs a solid layer of shredded lettuce inside that folded tortilla. At roughly $6, it’s a hearty pick, but the lettuce is baked into the design.
You can order it with no lettuce, and honestly, that’s the smart call this month. Taco Bell has said it removed the affected Taylor Farms lettuce and is replacing it, but the recall stands based on the traceback and the case data. Until things settle down, skipping the lettuce layer costs you nothing and takes one variable off the table.
Crunchy Tacos And Soft Tacos
The classics. A Crunchy Taco or Soft Taco runs about $2 to $2.50, and both come standard with a handful of shredded lettuce right on top of the beef and cheese. Order a Supreme version and you get even more, plus tomatoes and sour cream.
These are lower on the list than the salad only because they carry less lettuce by volume, not because they’re clear. Cyclospora is sneaky in that it takes only a tiny number of oocysts to make someone sick, and the parasite can’t be grown in a lab or spotted easily. If you’re a two-tacos-and-a-drink kind of person, ask for no lettuce and you’re covering yourself.
Chalupa Supreme And Burrito Supreme
Anything with “Supreme” in the name is a tip-off that lettuce and tomato are part of the build. The Chalupa Supreme (around $5) and Burrito Supreme (around $5) both tuck shredded iceberg inside. It’s easy to miss because it’s wrapped up, but it’s in there.
The FDA and Taco Bell have both said the lettuce came from a single independent farm that makes up less than 1% of the U.S. iceberg supply, and Taco Bell removed the suspect lettuce from its supply chain nationwide. Good news. But if you want to be careful while the investigation wraps up, the Supreme upgrades are the easiest place to cut the lettuce.
The Walmart Bags In Your Fridge
This one isn’t fast food, but it’s the same recall, so it belongs here. Two Marketside products sold at Walmart got pulled: Iceberg Salad in 12-ounce and 24-ounce bags, and Shredded Lettuce in 8-ounce and 16-ounce bags, with Best If Used By dates of July 18 through August 3, 2026.
Those bags were shipped to 27 states, so plenty of shoppers have them at home. If you spot one in your crisper drawer, toss it or take it back to the store. Then clean any surface or container it touched with hot soapy water or run it through the dishwasher. The parasite shrugs off standard chlorine-based sanitizers, so soap, heat, and getting rid of the lettuce are your best bets.
What You Can Still Order Without Stressing
Good news for the drive-thru crowd: plenty of the menu never had iceberg lettuce to begin with. A Bean Burrito, a Cheesy Bean and Rice Burrito, a Quesadilla, the Cheesy Roll Up, and the Mexican Pizza all skip the shredded greens. Cinnamon Twists obviously do too.
Cooked ingredients are your friend here. Heat is the one thing Cyclospora can’t handle, and produce cooked to a high enough temperature won’t carry it. That’s why a hot bean burrito is a safer bet than a cold salad. Johns Hopkins experts note that cooking can kill the parasite, while raw, handled greens are where the risk sits. Order hot, order cooked, and you sidestep the whole mess.
The Smart Move Right Now
Here’s the short version. The Fiesta Taco Salad is the item to avoid, since it’s mostly the recalled lettuce. Nachos BellGrande, the Crunchwrap Supreme, and anything labeled Supreme are close behind. Bean burritos, quesadillas, and the Mexican Pizza are the ones worth your money if you’re still craving Taco Bell.
One more thing worth knowing. Regular stool tests don’t catch Cyclospora, so if you ate shredded iceberg lettuce in the two weeks before getting sick and the diarrhea keeps coming back, tell your doctor to test specifically for it. Officials also say more than one outbreak may be running at once across those 34 states, so don’t assume you’re in the clear just because you skipped Taco Bell. When in doubt, ask the restaurant where the lettuce came from, and lean toward the cooked stuff.
